November was designated as National American Indian Heritage Month in 1990 by President George H. W. Bush and Congress by joint resolution, after almost a century of efforts nationwide to recognize the contributions, achievements, and diverse histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples. This year, President Biden issued a proclamation encouraging the celebration of November 25, 2022 as Native American Heritage Day.
